Berkeley Web Design Student Launches KhodeUp

coding and computersMing Horn is a Berkeley High School junior who recently launched KhodeUp, a program that aims to empower Cambodian youth by providing web development training, access to the Internet and laptops, as well as ongoing mentorship. KhodeUp has already surpassed its $15,000 fundraising goal on Indiegogo.

A New Generation of Web Developers

A self-taught web developer, Ming became inspired to start KhodeUp after traveling to a Cambodian orphanage and speaking to teens in the community. According to Ming, many teens expressed interest in pursuing computer careers but simply lacked the resources and support to do so. To address this problem, Ming partnered with Charlotte Dubach-Reinhold and initiated the KhodeUp program. Charlotte is also a web developer and learned coding at Berkeley High’s Girls Who Code chapter.

The KhodeUp Program

The month long program will accommodate 20-40 students. During the first two weeks, students will learn the basics of HTML/CSS and JavaScript. During the remaining weeks, students will form groups and build responsive websites. Once the program ends, the students will continue to receive mentorship and access to resources so they can further develop their computer skills. Ming and Charlotte hope to encourage students to become web developers and eventually open their own web design business.

Our Thoughts

Ming and Charlotte exemplify the qualities of globally conscious leaders. Their dedication to positively impacting the world is truly inspiring. We wouldn’t be surprised if one day they open up their own Berkeley web design company — they clearly have the talent and drive to do so!

At Launch Brigade, we also believe in giving back to the community. Last year we partnered with Santa Cruz Regional Occupation Program (ROP) to prepare graduating high school students for entry level jobs in tech. The five-part program covered computers, networks and programming, and culminated in a team project. Our company focused specifically on teaching HTML and CSS.

We look forward to continuing to empower our youth and growing local talent – and we certainly hope to come across more inspiring stories like Ming’s.
